Parting the Clouds: Three Professional Frameworks in Medical Education

Irby, D.M., Hamstra, S.J.
Submitted: December, 2016

Outlines 3 frameworks of professionalism for medical education: virtue based, behavior based, identity formation. The distinction between professionalism as a trait (character or behavior) and professionalization as a process (identity formation and development) becomes more sharply visible as attributes of an individual. Professionalization, on the other hand, is concerned with the process of becoming a member of a profession. This includes processes of socialization and identity formation.
