Relative to the full MBI, single-item measures of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization exhibit strong and consistent associations with key outcomes in medical students, internal medicine residents, and practicing surgeons. Validation study. Improving physician satisfaction, reducing burnout, and facilitating retention need to be expanded beyond early career interventions and may need to be tailored by career stage
